Lessons learnt

One of my senior colleagues had once commented - "Is it lessons learnt? or are they just mistakes made?" Indeed - It can only be proven that a lesson is learnt if the same mistake is not repeated !! This is the reason why lessons learnt are recorded in an official 'document' at the finish of a project or a phase - so that the record may be used in other projects and a repetition may be averted. Whenever, my project manager or an auditor asks me to write the lessons learnt during the project, I scratch my head. For a 'fairly qualified and experienced person' like me 😄 , there are truly just a few 'technical' lessons learnt.  That is about the technical part of it. But there is no denying the fact that each project is an experiential ocean !! I mean each project is an experience in itself and each time there is an improvisation in whatever we do and the way we do it. So, what was the ACTUAL lesson/s learnt and whether it will really be useful in another...

Chapter 1 - A crass view of my profession

So where does an instrument engineer stand in this industry? I can comment on this for an instrument engineer in an engineering consultancy, because that is where I've worked for ...the past 15 years. Like all others, my career has been a roller coaster ride in its own rights, no comparison to anybody else.  An instrument engineer is a 'Jack of all trades...'.  My first boss had modified the latter part of the proverb as per his career experience as an instrument professional in an engineering company. When I started out, I disagreed with him, later on my own experience proved him right - 'Jack of all trades and should be master of all' was his version and now, there is not even a ppm (parts per million for all those non techies out there.) of me which disagrees !!    Instrumentation is a little bit of everything - Process, Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Piping, Equipment. Cost wise too, it is just a bit - compared to big brothers - Mechanical, Piping and...

The start.

The point of starting this blog was to put my experience down in black and white for my reference. However, additionally, I realise that this could be a handy tool for the new and upcoming people in the engineering industry - especially the budding instrumentation talent we have in Bharat - our great country . The engineering industry is a highly significant one and has flourished over the years. Many iconic structures, process plants, infrastructure, monuments have been built where the services of such 'agencies' or 'Engineers' have been utilized. For instance, the iconic Hoover dam was built employing the services of 8-9 engineering agencies. Likewise the two petronas towers were built / engineered by two independent engineering companies. The bandra worli sea link was done by an Indian engineering and construction company. If we go down into history, the pyramids of giza, the madurai meenakshi temples, macchu picchu, the ajanta and Ellora temples, have all been engi...
